What Is Felt Roofing?

Felt roofing consists of multiple layers of felt sheets which combine to create a barrier from the outside world. In order to make it waterproof, we coat it with bitumen tar, which seals the roof and makes it hard-wearing against the elements. This type of roofing is most commonly found on flat roofs, but you can also find it on pitched shed roofs too, for example.

Older examples did not have a great reputation as they would often crack and leak, but modern felt roofing is completely different. It is reliable and durable and can prove a fantastic solution for covering your flat roof.

Advantages Of Felt Roofing

There are many great advantages of felt roofing:

It is suitable for any size of job, from small dormers to whole buildings.

A felt roof is hard-wearing and can last up to 20 or even 30 years before you need to replace it.

It is durable and can protect against water and wind.

There is less labour needed to fit felt roofing on a flat roof than a pitched roof. This can save you money and get your project finished more quickly.

It is hugely cost-effective in terms of both labour and materials.

Felt is a proven and trusted roofing method.

Maintaining A Felt Roof

To maintain a felt roof and keep it in great condition, you should check it regularly. Inspect it at least once in spring and once in autumn. In addition, check it after a storm, heavy snowfall or high winds. Although felt is durable, you should still look for rips, tears, splits, ponding, and blistering, which can sometimes occur. You should also clear any debris or moss that has collected on top of the roof.

You can clean your felt roof with a brush or leaf blower, making sure you get rid of any obstacles to drainage from the roof.

In addition, keep an eye on your ceiling for any signs of potential leaking. On some occasions, you will be able to patch up a felt roof problem, but more serious issues need a professional to repair the damage.

Genuine Customer Feedback

Trusted for Felt Roof Replacements & Repairs

From ageing garage roofs to newly built extensions, we have completed projects for homeowners and businesses across the East Midlands. Here is what customers have said about the standard of our work and service.

I used Beeby Construction services to convert the loft in my Victorian terraced property. From start to finish James and his team were knowledgeable, helpful and professional guiding me through the building regulations process and offering ideas and solutions. Nothing was too much trouble and the end result is above and beyond what I expected, I am delighted. I can thoroughly recommend James and his team, they were always on site when agreed and worked swiftly with very minimal disturbance and inconvenience to myself.

Mandy Giles

James and the team did a fantastic job of converting the garage into a bathroom and a small bedroom, rebuilding the porch and giving it a new layout by moving the front door and windows and replacing the flat roof. They worked to a very high standard, turned up on time and were very pleasant and helpful. Nothing was too much trouble for them and they did some additional work for me landscaping the front of the house and some extras I hadn’t got around to like painting the inside of the airing cupboard. Every job was done carefully and completely finished off to my satisfaction and so I would recommend them.

Helen Cloke

Always dreamed of having a home gym when I get my house and James and the guys made it a reality. Bought the house back in Dec 2018 and had a detached garage that I felt was perfect to convert into a home gym. Saved up for a year, got in touch with James after checking out his website, social media and his reviews. The garage needed a new roof, new door, new floor and so much more! Can not recommend James and the guys enough. I have a few other projects I’d like to do to the house and will be using James for these projects!

Frequently Asked Questions

A felt roof replacement is a significant investment, and many customers want to understand their options before making a decision. Below are some of the questions we are regularly asked about modern felt roofing systems and how they perform over time.

Is modern felt roofing different from older felt systems?

Yes. Today’s materials are much more durable than older versions that many people remember. Modern torch-on systems are built in multiple layers to create a strong waterproof barrier. It offers better protection and a longer lifespan when professionally installed.

Small areas of damage can sometimes be repaired, but recurring leaks, lifting edges, trapped moisture, or widespread wear are often signs that replacement may be the better long-term option. We can inspect the roof and advise on the most practical solution.

Absolutely. It is commonly used on home extensions, garages, porches, workshops, and other flat-roofed structures. Its durability and weather resistance make it a popular choice for both residential and commercial properties.

Very little. Regular visual checks and keeping gutters clear are usually enough to help maintain its condition. If any issues are spotted early, they can often be addressed before they develop into more costly repairs.
